Born in Ratnagiri, editor of Marhatta(English) and Kesri(Marathi). Tilak was a extremist leader of the congress and part of the famous trio - Lal, Bal, Pal. Socially an orthodox,  but politically, much ahead of his contemporary politicians, he gave the popular slogan - 'Swaraj is my birth right and I shall have it'. He spread the massage of swadeshi to Poona and Bombey and organised Ganapati and Shivaji festivals to arouse patriotic feelings. He stressed that the aim of Swadeshi,  boycott and national education was attainment of Swaraj. He opened cooperative stores and headed the Swadeshi Wastu Pracharini Sabha. He founded Home Rule League in April 1916, which was stronger in Maharashtra, C.P. and Berar. He valued western education,  press freedom, individual freedom,  free political expression and organisation. He wanted to restructure the congress. He also wrote Gitarahasya, a commentary on Bhagvat Gita.
